Vaghe stelle da film, mine vaganti partenopee

25/04/2010 - Paolo Colucci

Özpetek's film shown at NY's Tribeca Film Festival
Font Size: Larger|Smaller
Tuesday, April 27, 2010
NEW YORK - Anatolia News Agency
Turkish director Ferzan Özpetek's latest movie "Mine Vaganti" (Loose Cannons) met with the U.S. audience for the first time as part of the Tribeca Film Festival held in New York City.
Özpetek's movie, which will also compete at the festival, one of the most important for independent film in the world, was introduced to cinema lovers at a gala night at New York's Chelsea Clearview Theater on Monday.
Speaking to the Anatolia news agency after the screening, Özpetek said he was quite happy about the positive reaction from the American audience and said his movie will be shown all across the country.
When asked why the film was made in the southern Italian town of Lecce, Özpetek said it was one of the places in the world that is worth seeing. Talking about the Turkish music in the featured in the film, he said, “Sezen Aksu is a magnificent artist and I like her music too much. Also, I am both Turkish and Italian and trying to do good things for both countries.”
Özpetek said he dedicated the film to his father. “One of the reasons why I dedicate this film to him is because our relationship was not the greatest. He did not like me making films but he admired my determination.” He also added that that his films would also be screened at the University of California, Los Angeles, or UCLA, in June.
"Mine Vaganti" will be shown as part of the Tribeca Film Festival today and Saturday.
Özpetek, who lives in Italy, made his directorial debut in 1997 with the movie "Hamam" (The Turkish Bath). The movie garnered considerable critical success and was later released in the U.S. His second film "Harem Suare" was a lyrical depiction of the last days of the Ottoman Empire.
Özpetek's other films include "The Ignorant Fairies," "Facing Windows," "Saturno Contro," "A Perfect Day" and lastly "Loose Cannons."

More than dinner and a movie
by Matt Margini
Published April 26, 2010
tweet facebook email print
Having lived through countless borderline-diabetes-inducing Sunday meals with my Italian-American family, I understand that food is important to our culture. I understand that it's important to our film culture, too. I understand that "Leave the gun, take the cannoli" would not resonate throughout film history if cannoli were not sacred morsels of delight. I understand that it's absolutely crucial that there be a sauce-making lesson in both "The Godfather" and "Goodfellas."

But I've found a film that tests the upper limit of Italian Epicureanism. That film is called "Loose Cannons," and it's currently playing at the Tribeca Film Festival. It's a pretty straightforward family dramedy. Tommasso (Riccardo Scamarcio), a gay man living in Rome with his boyfriend, comes home to a beautiful Southern town called Lecce and finds it difficult, to say the least, to come out to his conservative family. He finds it especially difficult after his brother, also gay, beats him to the punch and gives their father a heart attack.
The first notable thing about the movie is Scamarcio, who's essentially the Italian Robert Pattinson. We now know that his wide-eyed, lethargic stares — stares that have enthralled the impressionable teens of Italy for years now — can also work on dudes.
The second notable thing: holy shit, food. Food is everywhere in this movie. It's ostentatious, overflowing, teetering on the edge of "La Grande Bouffe" grotesqueness.
The family, we are told countless times, are pasta royalty: they run a state-of-the-art factory where we see Tommasso eating raw pasta off the assembly line. To which I say, fine. They could've been bourgeois successes of a less stereotypical sort, but I'll take it.
It's the rest of the food that sticks out — the dozens and dozens of glistening dishes on every single dinner table, the endless pile of de-crusted cucumber sandwiches Tommasso eats with his (nearly more than a) lady friend. I don't mean to ruin the movie, but I can't avoid mentioning the film's emotional climax, which is also its gluttonous peak. Diabetic Grandma, feeling some sort of hazy regret, puts on her best makeup and eats plate after plate of cake until she drops dead. We never learn where the desserts came from, or how she smuggled them into her room.
There is, of course, the possibility that Turkish director Ferzan Ozpetek is poking fun at the overflowing Italian dinner table as a symbol of familial unity. It wouldn't be the first time the trope has been turned upside down. One of the ways Matteo Garrone makes "Gommorah" feel like the 'wrong' kind of gangster movie is by taking food out of the equation. Meals are not enjoyed among the guys. One of the characters, an artisan tailor, is convinced to sell his secrets to the Chinese after he finds their cooking to be superior. To the Italian viewer, there is no better way to suggest that crime-infested Naples is an unregenerate hellhole.
But I'm really not so sure if "Loose Cannons" critiques the ideology, recapitulates it, or both. When Grandma, before her final indulgence, tells Tommasso to feel the pasta with his hands and imagine the mouths it's going to feed — is she being serious? Is that supposed to help him find his place in the world? Is she implying that pasta progeny will replace his actual progeny, and that's what he should tell his parents when he comes out?
Honestly, it makes you wonder if the movie was written by Liz Lemon.
Matt Margini is Pretentiousaurus.

      “ E ALFIN DELLA RIMA… IO M’ARDO! ”

Parte dell'incasso sarà devoluto in beneficenza.

Il viaggio inizierà alle ore 21.30.
